Importance of Magnesium

Importance of Magnesium - Trace Minerals

Dr. Starkey: Hi, this is Dr. Starkey. Welcome back to Trace Your Day.

Today is one of those topics that I don’t think we discuss enough, that’s the importance of magnesium.

I don’t think at any point of our lives is magnesium more important than at this present time. I think I could mention one word and we could all probably agree as to the amount of stress we are facing as a society.

And yet at the same time, when it comes to magnesium, magnesium is known as this tranquil element. It’s that element that helps calm the body, calm the nerves. And yet, anytime that we experience stress, it depletes magnesium.

It does this by activating the sympathetic nervous system, and yet we of course lose magnesium through exercising, fasting, those that have high blood pressure, insulin resistance in our society today, sleep deprivation, feeling anxious is a warning indicator that you need more magnesium.

Any time our body feels like its under attack, the body is going to utilize more magnesium. Yet at the same time, some of our choices in our beverages – dehydration causes magnesium deficiency, alcohol consumption, sugar consumption, the list goes on and on.

I don’t want to be negative, but at the same time, I think when we look at the demand that magnesium has in our bodies, you know. Magnesium is known for activating over 300 enzymatic responses in the body. So, if we’re deficient in just this one element, can you imagine what the catastrophic effects can be on our internal system that we never get to see or touch?

And yet I think that magnesium is one of those elements that we sometimes shelf and assume that “I get enough in my multivitamin.” But I don’t think that that’s enough today.

In fact, when we start looking at the different types of ways we can approach magnesium, I’m a believer that if we lived in a perfect world, we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. We really wouldn’t. There’d be no need. We’d be of course consuming this mineral from our food sources.

And I think that when we start looking at what there commended daily allowance is right now in our daily society, anywhere from300-420 mg a day, and of course if you’re pregnant, that number goes up even further.

But I think that when we start looking at food sources, we should be able to get some magnesium. And again, we’re only as healthy as our soil is fertile. I have to bring that up because again, that is a topic at hand that still needs to be addressed.

And yet, if we were to eat, let’s say 1 oz. of almonds, that would give us about 80 mg is what this information is stating. Spinach - a half a cup is about 78 mg, roasted cashews - 74 mg, soy milk - 61 mg, black cooked beans - 60 mg, edamame - 50 mg, peanut butter, 2 tablespoons - 49 mg. There’s about 32 mg magnesium in a medium sized banana.

So these are the places that we should be getting our magnesium on a daily basis, but at the same time, it’s estimated that 90% of our society do not eat or meet our daily value of fruits and vegetables that we’re ingesting daily - 90% in our society. That tells me a little bit about where we need to be emphasizing this demand for magnesium.

And ultimately, that’s where with Trace Minerals, they are a magnesium company. I think that when it comes right down to it, we have the number one selling liquid magnesium supplement in the industry. And that’s by the SPINS data group that brought that to our attention with our Mega Mag and our Ionic Magnesium.

And a full serving size is 400 mg. I love to bring up the fact that with our ConcenTrace, I think that this is one of the best sources of magnesium naturally occurring in our industry. And in 250 mg, yes, we sell it as a trace mineral supplement, but when you look at the magnesium source in it, you know in 40 drops of ConcenTrace, you’ll find 250 mg.

I don’t mention this very often, Trace Minerals has given mean opportunity to have my own line, so in the Dr. Starkey’s line, my Ultra Magnesium has in a serving, 420 mg of magnesium per serving.

So, one thing that I love to mention about that is again, these are all liquids. We also have chewables. I think when it comes to the chewables and the gummies, this is a delivery system that is very popular right now in our society of those consumers from 35 and younger. But we have gummy magnesium, which per gummy is about 84 mg per gummy. That’s a 4-gummy serving size, which will give you about 336 mg. We have that in tangerine, watermelon, and peach.

We have magnesium effervescents, which in one effervescent is 150 mg. We also have a magnesium tablet and in 2 tablets, you get 300 mg. We also have powders. We’re really well known for our Stress-X magnesium which is in a powder. It comes in a 50 serving and 100 servings. In one serving, you get350 mg of magnesium. That comes in both a lemon lime flavor and a raspberry lemon flavor.

We also have a magnesium pack which again is very convenient. You can put it in your pocket. You’d never know it’s there, carry it around all day. Hopefully you don’t carry it around all day. Per pack is 350mg.

We also have a flavored liquid magnesium. In one serving is300 mg. So, we have a delivery system that we hope we can meet our consumer’s needs. Yet at the same time, we also have some wonderful topicals.

You’ve heard me mention this before that I think we can heal from the outside in as well as the inside out. I think we can take in some wonderful nutrients from our skin. I love using the ConcenTrace mineral drops as a topical. I think many of you have heard my experience with my chainsaw accident and how I helped that healing process by applying those minerals topically. I truly believe that they have an amazing healing ability topically.

We have a magnesium gel and I love to state that there’s no parabens, there’s no fragrances, there’s no dyes, it’s easy to apply, it’s anon-greasy formula. We also have magnesium lotion as well as the pure magnesium oils.

At this point, one of the things that I love to mention to our customer base and to our listeners is that I truly believe that if you’re not supplementing magnesium in your diets or in your supplemental programs, we are deficient, or you will be deficient.

I think with what we’re up against today with the amount of stress that we’re under. That’s the one that really stands out. It doesn’t matter what we’re reading or what we’re looking at whether you’re watching the news or your cellphones or your iPads. There’s something there.

Stress is just a part of life. It will always be a part of life. And of course, in this case it seems to be more evident, but I think that if we’re not paying close attention and we’re keeping ourselves well-hydrated and making sure that we’re not magnesium deficient, I think that this is a wonderful supplement that can help us overcome the effects of stress.

I hope this information helps and more importantly I hope it motivates you to look at your diets, look at your supplementation, and find out, ask some of those questions in the mirror as to what you are dealing with and then look at how our physical and emotional health is, not to mention these bouts with depression and anxiety. I truly believe that is a red flag and a wonderful marker of magnesium deficiency if you’re not addressing it.

So, I hope this information helps, and until next week –best of health.
